In 2016, a client approached two friends who had 20 years of combined experience in market research data collection. The ask sounded simple: we needed to track a group of herdsmen who had undergone conservancy sensitisation training across a 24-month quarterly to capture indicators.
The herdsmen were migratory communities transversing East Africa. They rarely verbalized quantitative information about their lives, such as the number of children and herd size,
What did we do? We mapped out their migratory routes and set up camp at the water points every four months, and we managed to track 92% of the original sample. We did the interviews, observed them, took counts and asked them to use sticks, pebbles, and drawings on earth to illustrate what was changing. The insights profound Gmaurich Was Born!
